🔮 The Oracle Speaks
✨ Essence
In the modern world, Hexagram 57 embodies the art of gentle penetration, where persistence triumphs over brute strength. Like a soft breeze that eventually shapes the landscape, this energy teaches that true influence arises from adaptability, consistency, and quiet determination. It advises approaching challenges with flexibility, allowing ideas and actions to seep into situations gradually rather than crashing against them. Embrace this to foster deep, lasting change in relationships, projects, or personal growth without resistance.
The double Wind trigrams create a harmonious flow of penetrating energy, doubling the wind's natural quality of movement and infiltration. The lower Wind grounds this gentleness in your inner foundation, urging subtle inner adjustments that build momentum. The upper Wind extends this outward, amplifying influence through networks and subtle communications. Together, they form a vortex of soft power, where inner clarity meets external reach, enabling ideas to permeate structures effortlessly.
🖼️ The Image
A vast reed forest sways in unison under an endless sky, each blade bending yet unbroken as the wind threads through their ranks, carving hidden paths in the earth below. Mist rises from a serene lake, carried by zephyrs that slip unseen into every crevice of a distant city, awakening dormant seeds without a sound.

📊 The Six Lines
Line 1: The Foundation
Begin with whispers rather than proclamations; plant seeds of influence in fertile soil through small, consistent acts. This stage rewards humility and observation, allowing your gentle approach to take root unnoticed. Build momentum slowly to avoid early scattering.
When Changing: When changing, initial subtlety meets unexpected resistance—pause, reassess, and redirect your breeze to find an easier path forward.
Line 2: The Inner Growth
Cultivate inner steadiness amid flux; your gentle persistence now gathers allies drawn to your calm reliability. Deepen connections through empathetic listening rather than direct persuasion. This builds a quiet network of support.
When Changing: Moving here signals harmonious progress—advance steadily, as your subtle efforts align with favorable currents for smooth expansion.
Line 3: The Threshold
Faced with denser obstacles, your firmness shines; penetrate decisively yet softly, like wind through a keyhole. Avoid rigidity—channel energy into targeted, repeated nudges. Transition requires balancing assertiveness with grace.
When Changing: Instability arises if overextended—retreat temporarily to regroup, preventing burnout from pushing too hard against unyielding barriers.
Line 4: The Outer Beginning
Extend your influence outward with finesse; adapt to new environments by mirroring their rhythms before introducing change. Collaborate subtly, letting others feel ownership of ideas you plant. Success comes from seamless integration.
When Changing: Transformation invites opportunity—shift tactics fluidly, turning external challenges into gateways for deeper penetration.
Line 5: The Ruler
From this leadership perch, wield soft authority; inspire through example and quiet counsel, permeating the group like fragrance in air. Delegate with trust, allowing your vision to spread organically. Peak influence flows from non-interference.
When Changing: Change warns of fleeting dominance—prepare for flux by nurturing successors, ensuring your gentle legacy endures.
Line 6: The Culmination
At the apex, wind's fury warns of excess; consolidate gains before overreaching scatters your efforts. Reflect on achievements and withdraw gracefully to avoid dissipation. Completion demands knowing when to still the gale.
When Changing: Moving signals exhaustion—release attachments, pivot to rest, and let new cycles emerge from the quiet aftermath.
The classic text — James Legge, 1882
The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are transcribed from a scan of that printing (Wikimedia Commons, Sacred Books of the East - Volume 16.djvu, scan pages 223, 224 and 225; printed pages 189–191): the scan's machine-read text was corrected line by line against the page images (2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.
The judgment
Sun intimates that (under the conditions which it denotes) there will be some little attainment and progress. There will be advantage in movement onward in whatever direction. It will be advantageous (also) to see the great man.
The image
From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 372 (printed p. 338), corrected by eye against the page image.
(Two trigrams representing) wind, following each other, form Sun. The superior man, in accordance with this, reiterates his orders, and secures the practice of his affairs.
The lines, counted from the bottom
-
Line 1 (bottom)
The first line, divided, shows its subject (now) advancing, (now) receding. It would be advantageous for him to have the firm correctness of a brave soldier.
-
Line 2
The second line, undivided, shows the representative of Sun beneath a couch, and employing diviners and exorcists in a way bordering on confusion. There will be good fortune and no error.
-
Line 3
The third line, undivided, shows its subject penetrating (only) by violent and repeated efforts. There will be occasion for regret.
-
Line 4
The fourth line, divided, shows all occasion for repentance (in its subject) passed away. He takes game for its threefold use in his hunting.
-
Line 5
The fifth line, undivided, shows that with firm correctness there will be good fortune (to its subject). All occasion for repentance will disappear, and all his movements will be advantageous. There may have been no (good) beginning, but there will be a (good) end. Three days before making any changes, (let him give notice of them); and three days after, (let him reconsider them). There will (thus) be good fortune.
-
Line 6 (top)
The sixth line, undivided, shows the representative of penetration beneath a couch, and having lost the axe with which he executed his decisions. However firm and correct he may (try to) be, there will be evil.

🙏 Daily Practice
Daily Ritual

Throughout the day, perform one small, gentle action toward that goal without expectation. 4. Evening: note subtle shifts observed.
Meditation
Close your eyes and imagine becoming a soft wind entering a locked garden; feel yourself slipping through cracks, stirring leaves gently. Circulate this energy through your body, softening tensions. Rest in the garden's blooming response, embodying permeable power.
Journaling Prompts
1. What barriers am I facing, and how can I approach them like wind? 2. Where have small, consistent efforts paid off recently? 3. What must I release to allow gentle penetration?
🔄 Mark the Changing Lines
A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.
No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 57 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.

Hexagrams inside and beside this one
Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.
-
Nuclear
Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Lake) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Fire), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.
-
Inverted
Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 57 and 58 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.
-
Opposite
Hexagram 51: Zhèn (The Arousing)
Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
