🔮 The Oracle Speaks
✨ Essence
This hexagram evokes the spirit of the wanderer navigating unfamiliar landscapes, urging adaptability, humility, and keen awareness amid change. In modern life, it speaks to transitions like relocating, career shifts, or personal reinventions, where success hinges on light-footed presence rather than forceful control. Embrace impermanence as your ally, observing keenly without attachment to outcomes or places. The wanderer's wisdom lies in gathering insights from fleeting encounters, transforming movement into inner wealth.
The lower trigram, Mountain, grounds the energy with steadfast detachment and inner solidity, like ancient rock enduring winds of change. The upper trigram, Fire, overlays this with illuminating clarity and transient passion, its flames licking the heights yet unable to root deeply. Together, they birth a dynamic tension: fire's warmth seeks mountain's cool refuge, fostering vigilance and modest brilliance rather than blazing dominance. This interplay teaches that true enlightenment in transition comes from contained energy perched on unmovable resolve.
🖼️ The Image
A solitary ember glows atop a jagged cliff at dusk, casting golden flickers across fog-shrouded valleys below, revealing hidden trails only to those who pause without possessing. The mountain looms eternal, indifferent, while the fire's dance invites the traveler to mirror its brevity—warmth without weight, light without legacy.

⏰ Timing
Duration of Influence: Two to six weeks, mirroring a purposeful short journey
Action Window: Within the first 3-7 days, while initial momentum builds
📊 The Six Lines
Line 1: The Foundation
Begin your journey with firm yet humble steps, drawing strength from inner resolve like roots gripping hidden earth. Avoid overreaching; small, deliberate actions build momentum without drawing undue attention. This base yang line promises stability if you honor the unknown with respect.
When Changing: When changing, uncertainty stirs at the outset—pause to reassess your provisions and intentions, transforming potential missteps into wise pivots.
Line 2: The Inner Growth
Cultivate quiet observation in this receptive phase, absorbing the rhythms of new surroundings like a hidden spring nourishing the path ahead. Yield to guidance from locals or subtle signs, fostering alliances through genuine curiosity. Inner harmony blooms when you prioritize learning over leading.
When Changing: A moving yin here signals relational openings—embrace invitations to connect deeply, turning solitude into supportive networks.
Line 3: The Threshold
At this crossroads, vulnerability tests your poise; friction arises from unmet expectations in foreign terrain. Release rigid plans, adapting with grace to avoid escalation into conflict. Humility here forges resilience, turning trials into tales of triumph.
When Changing: Change brings breakthrough—shed outdated baggage decisively, emerging lighter and aligned with destiny's flow.
Line 4: The Outer Beginning
Step into external engagements with cautious warmth, offering value without demanding permanence. Your presence, like a guest fire in a stranger's hearth, thrives on reciprocity and timely withdrawal. Focus on mutual benefit to secure safe passage forward.
When Changing: This shift amplifies opportunities—leverage hospitality wisely, converting brief alliances into lasting opportunities.
Line 5: The Ruler
In this commanding position, wield influence through confident clarity, guiding others with visionary light from your vantage. Balance authority with approachability, inspiring loyalty amid mobility. Peak potential unfolds when leadership serves the journey, not the ego.
When Changing: Movement here warns of hubris—temper ambition with detachment, evolving influence into enduring wisdom.
Line 6: The Culmination
At journey's apex, lofty vision risks detachment from reality; grand gestures may scatter like ash on wind. Warns against overextension—honor completion by releasing with grace. True mastery lies in knowing when to fade, leaving embers for others.
When Changing: Changing culminates in renewal—dissolve excesses boldly, birthing fresh cycles from the heights.
The classic text — James Legge, 1882
The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are transcribed from a scan of that printing (Wikimedia Commons, Sacred Books of the East - Volume 16.djvu, scan pages 221 and 222; printed pages 187–188): the scan's machine-read text was corrected line by line against the page images (2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.
The judgment
Lü intimates that (in the condition which it denotes) there may be some little attainment and progress. If the stranger or traveller be firm and correct as he ought to be, there will be good fortune.
The image
From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 371 (printed p. 337), corrected by eye against the page image.
(The trigram representing) a mountain and above it that for fire form Lü. The superior man, in accordance with this, exerts his wisdom and caution in the use of punishments and not allowing litigations to continue.
The lines, counted from the bottom
-
Line 1 (bottom)
The first line, divided, shows the stranger mean and meanly occupied. It is thus that he brings on himself (further) calamity.
-
Line 2
The second line, divided, shows the stranger, occupying his lodging-house, carrying with him his means of livelihood, and provided with good and trusty servants.
-
Line 3
The third line, undivided, shows the stranger, burning his lodging-house, and having lost his servants. However firm and correct he (try to) be, he will be in peril.
-
Line 4
The fourth line, undivided, shows the traveller in a resting-place, having (also) the means of livelihood and the axe, (but still saying), 'I am not at ease in my mind.'
-
Line 5
The fifth line, divided, shows its subject shooting a pheasant. He will lose his arrow, but in the end he will obtain praise and a (high) charge.
-
Line 6 (top)
The sixth line, undivided, suggests the idea of a bird burning its nest. The stranger, (thus represented), first laughs and then cries out. He has lost his ox(-like docility) too readily and easily. There will be evil.
🌍 Modern Applications
💼 Career & Work
In professional shifts like job changes or remote work travels, prioritize networking with poise and short-term wins over long-term claims. Success flows from delivering value as a 'guest expert,' building bridges without overcommitting. Stay alert to cultural nuances in new teams or industries.
💕 Relationships
Approach new connections with open curiosity, savoring depth without possession—like campfires shared under stars. In love, it advises mobility in partnerships, honoring independence to prevent stagnation. Foster bonds through shared adventures, releasing when paths diverge.
🏃 Health & Wellness
Maintain vitality through mindful movement, like daily walks in nature to ground nomadic energy and prevent restlessness. Watch for stress in digestive fire; nourish with light, warming foods. Mental wellness thrives on journaling transient experiences to process emotional wanderlust.
🧘 Spiritual Growth
Embark on inner pilgrimages, using movement meditations to detach from ego-anchors and ignite soul clarity. This path dissolves illusions of permanence, revealing spirit's eternal journey. Integrate practices like breathwork to balance fire's flicker with mountain's calm.
🎯 Decision Making
Evaluate options through a traveler's lens: what serves the path ahead without heavy loads? Test choices with small steps, observing outcomes like roadside signs. Favor flexibility over fixation for aligned, liberated choices.
🙏 Daily Practice
Daily Ritual
At twilight, select three small items symbolizing burdens (e.g., notes of worries), place them in a bowl with a candle flame nearby. Visualize releasing them as you walk a short loop outside, affirming lightness upon return. Extinguish the candle, scattering ashes to wind, sealing your unburdened step forward.
Meditation
Sit comfortably, envision yourself as a glowing ember atop a vast mountain, feeling the stone's steady support beneath flickering warmth. Breathe in clarity from distant horizons, exhaling attachments to familiar valleys. Rest in this transient brilliance for five minutes, emerging renewed for the road.
Journaling Prompts
1. What 'foreign lands' am I entering today, and how can I approach them humbly? 2. Which attachments weigh my journey, and what insights might their release bring? 3. Recall a past wander that taught me—how does it illuminate my current path?
🔄 Mark the Changing Lines
A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.
No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 56 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.
🔗 Related Hexagrams
Opposite: Hexagram 59 Dispersion, as it embodies dissolving boundaries and scattering while the Wanderer maintains contained, vigilant form.
Companion: Hexagram 62 Small Crossing, amplifying themes of humility and precise steps in precarious travels.
Evolution: Often evolves into Hexagram 36 Inner Illumination, where the wanderer's fire retreats inward for sustained brilliance amid adversity.
Hexagrams inside and beside this one
Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.
-
Nuclear
Hexagram 28: Dà Guò (Great Exceeding)
Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Wind) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Lake), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.
-
Inverted
Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 55 and 56 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.
-
Opposite
Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
