Dispersion

Wind over Water
"Dissolve Barriers, Reform Unity"

🔮 The Oracle Speaks

Winds weave through veiled waters, unraveling knots of the unseen heart. In gentle dissolution, barriers fade like dawn mist, birthing clarity from chaos. Surrender to the scatter, seeker, for therein lies the alchemy of reunion.

✨ Essence

Dispersion reveals the art of release, where stuck energies break apart to flow anew, much like clouds parting for sunlight in a cluttered sky. This hexagram guides you to dismantle outdated habits or conflicts, creating space for innovation and connection. In modern life, it signals breakthroughs in stalled projects or relationships by embracing impermanence. True progress blooms not from clinging, but from allowing natural evaporation of what no longer serves.

The lower trigram of Water holds deep, intuitive undercurrents, fluid yet prone to pooling stagnation. Above, Wind's subtle penetration stirs these depths, dispersing vapors upward in a dance of evaporation. This union crafts a penetrating gentleness, where emotional reservoirs are aired without force, fostering transparency. Wind over Water teaches that persistence in softness can dissolve even the hardest resistances, turning isolation into shared mist.

🖼️ The Image

📊 The Six Lines

Line 1: The Foundation

At the outset, anchor your dispersion with quiet resolve, initiating subtle shifts in rigid foundations. Gentle probing prevents overwhelm, allowing initial barriers to soften like ice in spring thaw. Build momentum through small, consistent breezes of change.

When Changing: When moving, early efforts gain unexpected allies, accelerating dissolution toward harmonious flow.

Line 2: The Inner Growth

Deep within, nurture vulnerability by yielding to inner currents, dissolving self-imposed isolation. This receptive space invites true alliances, as softness permeates hidden tensions. Cultivate patience, letting dispersion ripple outward from the core.

When Changing: Moving here amplifies emotional release, drawing supportive winds to clarify buried truths.

Line 3: The Threshold

Crossing into dispersion's challenge, confront gathered resistances with bold yet flexible force, risking temporary chaos for liberation. Avoid forcing breaks; instead, channel energy to shatter illusions at the edge. This pivot demands courage to embrace the scattering storm.

When Changing: Instability arises but resolves swiftly, propelling you beyond the divide into open skies.

Line 4: The Outer Beginning

Stepping outward, integrate dispersion with others through empathetic diffusion, bridging divides with shared vulnerability. Release personal holdings to foster collective flow, turning individual mists into communal fog. Harmony emerges from mutual softening.

Line 6: The Culmination

At the apex, guard against over-dispersion, where total scattering risks loss of form; consolidate gains into stable essence. Celebrate the cleared path, but anchor the ethereal into tangible legacy. Completion whispers: reform from the vapors risen.

When Changing: Excess scatters completely, urging retreat to gather essence for a fresh cycle's dawn.

The classic text — James Legge, 1882

The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are transcribed from a scan of that printing (Wikimedia Commons, Sacred Books of the East - Volume 16.djvu, scan pages 228, 229 and 230; printed pages 194–196): the scan's machine-read text was corrected line by line against the page images (2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.

The judgment

Hwân intimates that (under its conditions) there will be progress and success. The king goes to his ancestral temple; and it will be advantageous to cross the great stream. It will be advantageous to be firm and correct.

The image

From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 375 (printed p. 341), corrected by eye against the page image.

(The trigram representing) water and that for wind moving above the water form Hwân. The ancient kings, in accordance with this, presented offerings to God and established the ancestral temple.

🙏 Daily Practice

Daily Ritual

Begin by filling a bowl with water and placing it before you at dawn. Whisper your stuck areas into the water, then gently blow across the surface to ripple and disperse the words. Watch the waves settle into calm, affirming release; pour out the water to earth as offering. Repeat for three days to embody the energy.

Meditation

Visualize yourself as a misty lake shrouded in fog; invite soft winds to arise from your breath, lifting veils to reveal inner light. Feel tensions dissolve into vapor, rising freely as you exhale resistance. Rest in the clarity beneath, breathing unity back into form for five breaths.

Journaling Prompts

1. What barriers am I ready to dissolve today? 2. How has clinging created stagnation in my life? 3. What new connections emerge from this release?

🔄 Mark the Changing Lines

A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.

Which lines changed?

No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 59 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.

🔗 Related Hexagrams

Opposite: Hexagram 50 (Cauldron), which gathers and solidifies where Dispersion scatters and fluidifies.

Companion: Hexagram 20 (Contemplation), enhancing dispersion's clarity through patient observation.

Evolution: Often evolves into Hexagram 29 (Abyssal Waters), deepening into profound emotional flow post-dissolution.

Hexagrams inside and beside this one

Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.

  • Nuclear

    Hexagram 27: Yí (Nourishment)

Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Thunder) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Mountain), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.

  • Inverted

    Hexagram 60: Jié (Limitation)

Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 59 and 60 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.

  • Opposite

    Hexagram 55: Fēng (Abundance)

Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
