Wind over Earth
"Watch wisely, wisdom flows."

🔮 The Oracle Speaks

From earth's silent cradle, gentle winds ascend, unveiling the hidden tapestry of existence. Behold the grand vista without stirring a leaf, for true sight pierces veils of illusion. In this poised gaze, futures unfold like scrolls in the dawn breeze.

✨ Essence

Hexagram 20 invites you to pause and observe life's unfolding patterns with detached clarity, fostering profound understanding before any step forward. Like a strategist surveying the field, this energy emphasizes the power of perspective to reveal opportunities and pitfalls invisible in the rush of action. It teaches that wisdom arises not from doing, but from seeing deeply into the rhythms of people, situations, and self. Embrace this as a call to mindfulness, where contemplation becomes your most potent tool for alignment and foresight.

The lower trigram of Earth provides a vast, receptive foundation, grounding observation in stability and humility, absorbing all without judgment. Above it, the Wind trigram moves subtly, penetrating boundaries to gather insights from afar, like breezes carrying whispers across plains. Their union creates a dynamic of elevated watchfulness: Earth's steadiness supports Wind's expansive vision, preventing scattered thoughts while enabling broad, gentle penetration into truths. This interplay yields contemplative power—rooted yet reaching, passive yet perceptive.

The classic text — James Legge, 1882

The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are quoted word for word from the Wikisource transcription of this chapter (revision 11902131, fetched 2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.

The judgment

Kwân shows (how he whom it represents should be like) the worshipper who has washed his hands, but not (yet) presented his offerings;—with sincerity and an appearance of dignity (commanding reverent regard).

The image

From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 326 (printed p. 292), corrected by eye against the page image.

(The trigram representing) the earth, and that for wind moving above it, form Kwan. The ancient kings, in accordance with this, examined the (different) regions (of the kingdom), to see the (ways of the) people, and set forth their instructions.

The lines, counted from the bottom

  1. Line 1 (bottom)

The first line, divided, shows the looking of a lad;—not blamable in men of inferior rank, but matter for regret in superior men.

  2. Line 2

The second line, divided, shows one peeping out from a door. It would be advantageous if it were (merely) the firm correctness of a female.

  3. Line 3

The third line, divided, shows one looking at (the course of) his own life, to advance or recede (accordingly).

  4. Line 4

The fourth line, divided, shows one contemplating the glory of the kingdom. It will be advantageous for him, being such as he is, (to seek) to be a guest of the king.

  5. Line 5

The fifth line, undivided, shows its subject contemplating his own life(-course). A superior man, he will (thus) fall into no error.

  6. Line 6 (top)

The sixth line, undivided, shows its subject contemplating his character to see if it be indeed that of a superior man. He will not fall into error.

🔄 Mark the Changing Lines

A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.

Which lines changed?

No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 20 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.

Opposite: Hexagram 23 Stripping Away, which dismantles without the reflective pause of contemplation, leading to reactive erosion.

Companion: Hexagram 2 Receptive, amplifying grounded openness to enhance observational depth.

Hexagrams inside and beside this one

Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.

  • Nuclear

    Hexagram 23: Bō (Splitting Apart)

Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Earth) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Mountain), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.

  • Inverted

    Hexagram 19: Lín (Approach)

Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 19 and 20 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.

  • Opposite

Hexagram 34: Dà Zhuàng (Great Power)

Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
