Wind over Mountain
"Progress unfolds in patient whispers."

🔮 The Oracle Speaks

Whispers of wind carve ancient peaks, unveiling paths unseen by haste. In patient union, roots entwine with gales, birthing empires from whispers. Yield to the rhythm of seasons unfolding, for true ascent blooms in measured breath. Heed the mountain's silent vigil; development dawns not in storm, but in steady dawn.

✨ Essence

Hexagram 53 embodies the art of gradual development, where lasting success emerges from consistent, unhurried steps rather than bold leaps. It teaches that true progress mirrors nature's deliberate pace—think of a sapling pushing through soil or a river etching canyons over eons. In modern life, this hexagram advises building foundations brick by brick, fostering relationships and projects through sustained effort. Embrace it to navigate long-term goals, avoiding the pitfalls of impatience that scatter energy like leaves in a gale. Patience here is power, transforming incremental gains into monumental achievements.

The lower trigram Mountain provides unshakeable stability, a rooted foundation that anchors all movement. Above it, Wind flows gently, penetrating and adapting without force, symbolizing ideas and influences that spread subtly over time. Their interaction creates a dynamic where rigid earth yields to flexible air, illustrating how persistence softens obstacles. Wind over Mountain evokes breath filling stone lungs, awakening latent potential through harmonious persistence. This union warns against forcing change, urging instead a symbiotic dance of stillness and subtle motion.

The classic text — James Legge, 1882

The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are transcribed from a scan of that printing (Wikimedia Commons, Sacred Books of the East - Volume 16.djvu, scan pages 212 and 213; printed pages 178–179): the scan's machine-read text was corrected line by line against the page images (2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.

The judgment

Kien suggests to us the marriage of a young lady, and the good fortune (attending it). There will be advantage in being firm and correct.

The image

From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 367 (printed p. 333), corrected by eye against the page image.

(The trigram representing) a mountain and above it that for a tree form Kien. The superior man, in accordance with this, attains to and maintains his extraordinary virtue, and makes the manners of the people good.

The lines, counted from the bottom

  1. Line 1 (bottom)

The first line, divided, shows the wild geese gradually approaching the shore. A young officer (in similar circumstances) will be in a position of danger, and be spoken against; but there will be no error.

  2. Line 2

The second line, divided, shows the geese gradually approaching the large rocks, where they eat and drink joyfully and at ease. There will be good fortune.

  3. Line 3

The third line, undivided, shows them gradually advanced to the dry plains. (It suggests also the idea of) a husband who goes on an expedition from which he does not return, and of a wife who is pregnant, but will not nourish her child. There will be evil. (The case symbolised) might be advantageous in resisting plunderers.

  4. Line 4

The fourth line, divided, shows the geese gradually advanced to the trees. They may light on the flat branches. There will be no error.

  5. Line 5

The fifth line, undivided, shows the geese gradually advanced to the high mound. (It suggests the idea of) a wife who for three years does not become pregnant; but in the end the natural issue cannot be prevented. There will be good fortune.

  6. Line 6 (top)

The sixth line, undivided, shows the geese gradually advanced to the large heights (beyond). Their feathers can be used as ornaments. There will be good fortune.

🔄 Mark the Changing Lines

A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.

Which lines changed?

No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 53 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.

Hexagrams inside and beside this one

Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.

  • Nuclear

Hexagram 64: Wèi Jì (Before Completion)

Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Water) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Fire), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.

  • Inverted

Hexagram 54: Guī Mèi (The Marrying Maiden)

Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 53 and 54 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.

  • Opposite

Hexagram 54: Guī Mèi (The Marrying Maiden)

Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
