๐ฎ The Oracle Speaks
โจ Essence
Hexagram 58 embodies the pure essence of joy that arises from genuine connection and open-hearted exchange. It signals a time when pleasure flows naturally from authentic interactions, like laughter echoing across a serene lake. In modern life, this hexagram encourages seeking delight in relationships, creativity, and simple shared moments rather than superficial thrills. Cultivate joy by communicating openly, fostering harmony that uplifts all involved without forcing outcomes.
The upper Lake trigram mirrors the lower, creating a doubled reflection of receptive, shimmering energy that amplifies mutual delight. This interaction evokes two lakes side by side, their surfaces exchanging ripples in perfect synchrony, symbolizing harmonious communication and emotional resonance. The yang foundation in each trigram provides stability beneath the yielding yin surfaces, ensuring joy is grounded yet fluid. Together, they form a vessel for contagious happiness, where one person's openness inspires collective euphoria.

๐ The Six Lines
Line 1: The Foundation
Ground your joy in sincere beginnings, where quiet enthusiasm plants seeds of lasting connection. Initiate exchanges with genuine warmth, allowing natural bonds to form without pressure. This stable base ensures pleasure builds steadily, like sunlight warming a still pond at dawn.
When Changing: When changing, initial sparks of joy may flicker out if not nurtured, urging patience and deeper listening before expansion.
Line 2: The Inner Growth
Nurture inner receptivity to amplify emerging delight through empathetic dialogue. Let vulnerability invite others closer, transforming personal glee into communal harmony. Focus on subtle emotional cues to deepen bonds during this developmental phase.
When Changing: Transition here warns against over-attachment to fleeting pleasures, prompting release for fresh waves of connection.
Line 3: The Threshold
At this pivotal crossing, test joy's depth amid potential misunderstandings or superficial lures. Discern true resonance from empty chatter to avoid relational rifts. Challenge yourself to communicate boundaries clearly while preserving the light-hearted flow.
When Changing: Movement signals turbulence in shared delight; step back to realign intentions and restore clarity.
Line 4: The Outer Beginning
Extend your stable joy outward, initiating broader networks with confident, inviting energy. Lead by example in group settings, where your grounded mirth inspires collective upliftment. Balance assertiveness with openness to welcome diverse voices into the expanding circle.
When Changing: If shifting, outward expansions risk dilution; consolidate core connections before venturing further.
Line 5: The Ruler
From this influential perch, yield to the wisdom of receptive leadership, guiding through joyful influence rather than control. Foster peak harmony by listening deeply and reflecting others' truths, elevating the group's spirit. Your poised presence radiates contagious bliss, drawing allies into aligned purpose.
When Changing: Change here cautions against complacency in power; actively renew joy to prevent stagnation.
Line 6: The Culmination
At joy's zenith, beware excess indulgence that drowns depth in shallow revelry. Celebrate completion wisely, channeling elation into meaningful legacies. Gracefully release peaks to allow cycles of renewal, honoring joy's transient beauty.
When Changing: Culminating shift promises transformation beyond rapture, birthing profound inner peace from released exuberance.
The classic text โ James Legge, 1882
The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yรฎ King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are transcribed from a scan of that printing (Wikimedia Commons, Sacred Books of the East - Volume 16.djvu, scan pages 226 and 227; printed pages 192โ193): the scan's machine-read text was corrected line by line against the page images (2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.
The judgment
Tui intimates that (under its conditions) there will be progress and attainment. (But) it will be advantageous to be firm and correct.
The image
From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 374 (printed p. 340), corrected by eye against the page image.
(Two symbols representing) the waters of a marsh, one over the other, form Tui. The superior man, in accordance with this, (encourages) the conversation of friends and (the stimulus of) their (common) practice.

๐ Mark the Changing Lines
A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.
No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 58 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.

Opposite: Hexagram 47: Oppression, where confined waters stifle joy's free flow.

Hexagrams inside and beside this one
Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.
-
Nuclear
Hexagram 37: Jiฤ Rรฉn (The Family)
Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Fire) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Wind), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.
-
Inverted
Hexagram 57: Xรนn (The Gentle)
Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 57 and 58 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.
-
Opposite
Hexagram 52: Gรจn (Keeping Still)
Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
