"Kindle unity's hearth flame."

🔮 The Oracle Speaks

In the cradle of flames kissed by wandering winds, the household blooms as one eternal root. Gentle gales weave threads of kinship, guarding the sacred hearth from tempests without. Nurture the inner blaze with steadfast roles, and prosperity shall dance through every threshold.

✨ Essence

Hexagram 37 embodies the sacred architecture of close-knit circles, where family, chosen kin, or core teams form resilient sanctuaries amid life's storms. It teaches that true strength arises not from rigid control but from harmonious roles, mutual nourishment, and quiet devotion to shared rhythms. In today's fragmented world, this energy guides building micro-communities of trust—your home base, work pod, or inner circle—that anchor personal evolution. Embrace it to foster stability without stifling growth, turning ordinary bonds into profound sources of power.

The lower trigram Fire ignites the foundation with vibrant, illuminating passion, providing the essential warmth and clarity that sustains daily life. Upper Wind introduces subtle, pervasive influence, like a breeze carrying scents through every room, ensuring the fire's energy adapts and spreads without overwhelming. Their union creates a balanced flow: Fire's intensity is softened and directed by Wind's flexibility, preventing burnout while promoting gentle expansion. This interplay mirrors how inner vitality, when met with outer responsiveness, cultivates enduring household harmony and collective thriving.

The classic text — James Legge, 1882

The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are transcribed from a scan of that printing (Wikimedia Commons, Sacred Books of the East - Volume 16.djvu, scan pages 170, 171 and 172; printed pages 136–138): the scan's machine-read text was corrected line by line against the page images (2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.

The judgment

For (the realisation of what is taught in) Kiâ Zăn, (or for the regulation of the family), what is most advantageous is that the wife be firm and correct.

The image

From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 346 (printed p. 312), corrected by eye against the page image.

(The trigram representing) fire, and that for wind coming forth from it, form Kiâ Zăn. The superior man, in accordance with this, orders his words according to (the truth of) things, and his conduct so that it is uniformly consistent.

  2. Line 2

The second line, divided, shows its subject taking nothing on herself, but in her central place attending to the preparation of the food. Through her firm correctness there will be good fortune.

  3. Line 3

The third line, undivided, shows its subject (treating) the members of the household with stern severity. There will be occasion for repentance, there will be peril, (but) there will (also) be good fortune. If the wife and children were to be smirking and chattering, in the end there would be occasion for regret.

  4. Line 4

The fourth line, divided, shows its subject enriching the family. There will be great good fortune.

  5. Line 5

The fifth line, undivided, shows the influence of the king extending to his family. There need be no anxiety; there will be good fortune.

🔄 Mark the Changing Lines

A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.

Which lines changed?

No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 37 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.

Hexagrams inside and beside this one

Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.

  • Nuclear

Hexagram 64: Wèi Jì (Before Completion)

Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Water) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Fire), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.

  • Inverted

    Hexagram 38: Kuí (Opposition)

Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 37 and 38 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.

  • Opposite

    Hexagram 40: Xiè (Deliverance)

Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
