🔮 The Oracle Speaks

In the dance of thunder beneath the laughing lake, yield to the current that carries you true. Follow not with blind steps, but with the wisdom of wind bending reeds in storm's embrace. Adapt as water seeks the sea, and harmony shall unfold in unexpected grace.

✨ Essence

Hexagram 17 embodies the art of flowing with life's rhythms, embracing adaptability as the key to effortless progress. In a world demanding rigidity, this hexagram teaches surrender to greater forces, allowing opportunities to reveal themselves through flexibility. It invites you to release control, trust emerging paths, and align with natural momentum for sustainable success. True power lies not in forcing outcomes, but in harmonizing with the world's subtle cues.

The lower trigram Thunder ignites sudden awakenings and dynamic energy from below, stirring the foundations with impulsive vitality. Above it, Lake reflects joy and openness, mirroring and amplifying these sparks into shared delight. Their union creates a magnetic pull: Thunder's raw force is softened and directed by Lake's receptive gleam, fostering attraction and timely following without resistance. This interplay symbolizes how inner drive finds outer expression through adaptive response, turning potential chaos into cooperative flow.

The classic text — James Legge, 1882

The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are quoted word for word from the Wikisource transcription of this chapter (revision 11885944, fetched 2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.

The judgment

Sui indicates that (under its conditions) there will be great progress and success. But it will be advantageous to be firm and correct. There will (then) be no error.

The image

From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 323 (printed p. 289), corrected by eye against the page image.

(The trigram for the waters of) a marsh and (that for) thunder (hidden) in the midst of it form Sui. The superior man in accordance with this, when it is getting towards dark, enters (his house) and rests.

The lines, counted from the bottom

  1. Line 1 (bottom)

The first line, undivided, shows us one changing the object of his pursuit; but if he be firm and correct, there will he good fortune. Going beyond (his own) gate to find associates, he will achieve merit.

  2. Line 2

The second line, divided, shows us one who cleaves to the little boy, and lets go the man of age and experience.

  3. Line 3

The third line, divided, shows us one who cleaves to the man of age and experience, and lets go the little boy. Such following will get what it seeks; but it will be advantageous to adhere to what is firm and correct.

  4. Line 4

The fourth line, undivided, shows us one followed and obtaining (adherents). Though he be firm and correct, there will be evil. If he be sincere (however) in his course, and make that evident, into what error will he fall?

  5. Line 5

The fifth line, undivided, shows us (the ruler) sincere in (fostering all) that is excellent. There will be good fortune.

  6. Line 6 (top)

The topmost line, divided, shows us (that sincerity) firmly held and clung to, yea, and bound fast. (We see) the king with it presenting his offerings on the western mountain.

🔄 Mark the Changing Lines

A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.

Which lines changed?

No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 17 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.

Hexagrams inside and beside this one

Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.

  • Nuclear

    Hexagram 53: Jiàn (Development)

Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Mountain) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Wind), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.

  • Inverted

Hexagram 18: Gǔ (Work on the Decayed)

Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 17 and 18 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.

  • Opposite

Hexagram 18: Gǔ (Work on the Decayed)

Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
