🔮 The Oracle Speaks
✨ Essence
The Receptive embodies the profound strength of openness and patience in a driven world, inviting you to step back from forceful striving and instead cultivate a welcoming space for opportunities to unfold naturally. It highlights the yin power of nurturing, supporting, and adapting, reminding us that success often arises from flow rather than friction. Embrace this energy to build lasting foundations through intuitive responsiveness rather than aggressive pursuit. In modern life, it guides sustainable growth in relationships, projects, and personal development by honoring natural rhythms.
With both upper and lower trigrams as Earth, this hexagram doubles the grounded, enveloping quality of pure yin energy, creating a vast, stable field that absorbs and transforms all it receives without resistance. The lower Earth provides unshakeable inner support, rooting you deeply, while the upper Earth extends outward as a protective canopy, fostering communal harmony and quiet influence. Their interaction forms a harmonious echo of containment and fertility, where inner stillness radiates to envelop the outer world in gentle persistence. This synergy teaches that doubled receptivity amplifies resilience, turning potential chaos into cultivated abundance.

📊 The Six Lines
Line 1: The Foundation
At the outset, anchor yourself in humble openness, allowing initial impressions to settle like sediment in calm waters. Cultivate inner quiet to discern true needs from fleeting urges. This base receptivity builds unassailable trust in life's unfolding.
When Changing: When this line moves to yang, gentle initiative sparks from the depths, urging careful steps forward while honoring the receptive core.
Line 2: The Inner Growth
Nurture emerging potentials with devoted care, like tending a hidden garden in soft earth. Balance selflessness with subtle boundaries to foster genuine inner expansion. Here, quiet support accelerates profound personal ripening.
When Changing: A shift to yang introduces balanced outreach, harmonizing inner growth with timely connection to others.
Line 3: The Threshold
At this pivot, challenges test your yielding nature—resist the urge to force outcomes amid uncertainty. Practice detached observation to navigate friction without losing composure. Transition strengthens through adaptive flow, revealing hidden pathways.
When Changing: Moving yang energy pierces the threshold, transforming obstacles into gateways via courageous yet receptive action.
Line 4: The Outer Beginning
Extend receptivity outward to form alliances, welcoming guidance from those with vision. Offer steady support without seeking control, creating mutual elevation. This entry into broader spheres rewards with enriching partnerships.
When Changing: Yang activation empowers outer initiatives, blending devotion with leadership to magnetize collaborative success.
Line 5: The Ruler
In the central throne, wield influence through serene counsel and inclusive wisdom, drawing others into harmonious orbit. Prioritize collective well-being over personal acclaim for peak efficacy. Receptive authority inspires loyalty and enduring legacy.
When Changing: A yang shift crowns receptive rule with dynamic clarity, enabling decisive guidance rooted in deep intuition.
Line 6: The Culmination
At the apex, pure receptivity risks overextension—step back to consolidate gains before exhaustion sets in. Reflect on the cycle's lessons to prepare for renewal. Completion invites graceful retreat, honoring the yin way's natural close.
When Changing: Transforming to yang heralds a bold culmination, propelling receptive energy into creative rebirth.
The classic text — James Legge, 1882
The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are quoted word for word from the Wikisource transcription of this chapter (revision 11866915, fetched 2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.
The judgment
Khwăn (represents) what is great and originating, penetrating, advantageous, correct and having the firmness of a mare. When the superior man (here intended) has to make any movement, if he take the initiative, he will go astray; if he follow, he will find his (proper) lord. The advantageousness will be seen in his getting friends in the south-west, and losing friends in the north-east. If he rest in correctness and firmness, there will be good fortune.
The image
From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 302 (printed p. 268), corrected by eye against the page image.
The (capacity and sustaining) power of the earth is what is denoted by Khwăn. The superior man, in accordance with this, with his large virtue supports (men and) things.

🔄 Mark the Changing Lines
A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.
No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 2 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.

Hexagrams inside and beside this one
Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.
-
Nuclear
Hexagram 2: Kūn (The Receptive) — this hexagram itself
Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Earth) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Earth), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.
-
Inverted
Hexagram 2: Kūn (The Receptive) — this hexagram itself
Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. This figure reads the same either way up (one of only eight that do), so the King Wen order pairs it with its opposite, Hexagram 1, instead. How much the inversion means is read differently from school to school.
-
Opposite
Hexagram 1: Qián (The Creative)
Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
