🔮 The Oracle Speaks
✨ Essence
Hexagram 12 reveals the chill of standstill, where grand visions hover out of reach and daily efforts grind to a halt amid misaligned forces. In today's world, it mirrors corporate gridlock, stalled projects, or emotional disconnects that drain vitality without resolution. This energy demands withdrawal from futile struggles, inviting a recalibration of priorities to prevent deeper entrapment. True power emerges not in resistance, but in discerning when to conserve strength for the inevitable thaw. Embrace this pause as a forge for resilience, transforming inertia into strategic readiness.
The upper trigram of Heaven radiates pure creative thrust—expansive, unyielding, and skyward-bound—while the lower trigram of Earth embodies quiet receptivity, craving fertile infusion from above. Yet here, Heaven's brilliance fails to descend, leaving Earth's vast fields parched and unresponsive, fostering a chasm of disconnection. This polarity breeds stagnation: ideals remain aloft, untethered from practical soil, and grounded efforts lack the spark of higher inspiration. The interaction warns of hubris in the heavens and passivity below, urging a humble bridge-building through aligned timing and mutual yield.
🖼️ The Image
A colossal crystal mountain floats inches above a mirror-still lake, its radiant facets reflecting infinite skies yet touching no ripple below. Shadows stretch long between them, pregnant with untapped reflections. This frozen proximity pulses with latent power, awaiting the earth's subtle tremor to shatter the divide.

📊 The Six Lines
Line 1: The Foundation
At the outset of standstill, fragile threads of harmony fray unnoticed in the depths. Ground yourself in solitary reflection rather than seeking external alliances that falter. This quiet base preserves your essence amid gathering clouds.
When Changing: When this line shifts to yang, it ignites a foundational spark, dissolving early inertia and inviting tentative forward steps.
Line 2: The Inner Growth
Deep within, isolation thickens like morning fog; nurture personal rituals to sustain your core amid relational voids. Avoid blame toward others, focusing instead on self-reliant cultivation. Inner fortitude here prevents the standstill from claiming your spirit.
When Changing: A changing line here bridges inner and outer worlds, fostering unexpected alliances that propel beyond stagnation.
Line 3: The Threshold
At the edge of impasse, turmoil tempts reckless charges; witness the chaos without engaging, allowing it to reveal hidden flaws. This trial tests endurance—retreat strategically to regroup. Perseverance transmutes threshold friction into wisdom.
When Changing: Transformation here signals a pivotal release, turning boundary strife into gateways of renewed momentum.
Line 4: The Outer Beginning
Emerging into the outer realm, assertive energy meets yielding ground; act with measured outreach to worthy allies alone. Discern true collaborators from pretenders to avoid amplifying deadlock. This line pioneers subtle progress through selective engagement.
When Changing: When it yields to yin, outer initiatives soften, redirecting force inward for deeper realignment before expansion.
Line 5: The Ruler
In the seat of influence, command standstill's end by modeling clarity and inviting heaven's descent through humble leadership. Rally the steadfast while sidelining the obstructive; your poise becomes the catalyst for collective thaw. Peak authority here demands vigilant discernment.
When Changing: A shift to yin humbles the ruler, dissolving ego barriers and harmonizing high and low for breakthrough union.
Line 6: The Culmination
At the apex, excess rigidity crowns the stagnation; step back from the fray to let natural cycles intervene. Warns against clinging to outdated thrones—release crowns the completion. True culmination lies in graceful withdrawal.
When Changing: Changing to yin culminates in total reversal, birthing flow from the ruins of frozen heights.
The classic text — James Legge, 1882
The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are quoted word for word from the Wikisource transcription of this chapter (revision 11868661, fetched 2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.
The judgment
In Phî there is the want of good understanding between the (different classes of) men, and its indication is unfavourable to the firm and correct course of the superior man. We see in it the great gone and the little come.
The image
From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 316 (printed p. 282), corrected by eye against the page image.
(The trigrams of) heaven and earth, not in intercommunication, form Phî. The superior man, in accordance with this, restrains (the manifestation) of) his virtue, and avoids the calamities (that threaten him). There is no opportunity of conferring on him the glory of emolument.
The lines, counted from the bottom
-
Line 1 (bottom)
The first line, divided, suggests the idea of grass pulled up, and bringing with it other stalks with whose roots it is connected. With firm correctness (on the part of its subject), there will be good fortune and progress.
-
Line 2
The second line, divided, shows its subject patient and obedient. To the small man (comporting himself so) there will be good fortune. If the great man (comport himself) as the distress and obstruction require, he will have success.
-
Line 3
The third line, divided, shows its subject ashamed of the purpose folded (in his breast).
-
Line 4
The fourth line, undivided, shows its subject acting in accordance with the ordination (of Heaven), and committing no error. His companions will come and share in his happiness.
-
Line 5
In the fifth line, undivided, we see him who brings the distress and obstruction to a close,—the great man and fortunate. (But let him say), 'We may perish! We may perish!' (so shall the state of things become firm, as if) bound to a clump of bushy mulberry trees.
-
Line 6 (top)
The sixth line, undivided, shows the overthrow (and removal of) the condition of distress and obstruction. Before this there was that condition. Hereafter there will be joy.
🌍 Modern Applications
💼 Career & Work
In professional realms, expect delays from mismatched teams or outdated strategies—pause to audit alliances and refine your unique value. Network selectively with aligned visionaries rather than forcing consensus. This phase hones strategic patience for future leaps.
💕 Relationships
Connections feel distant, like echoes across a canyon; honor the space without pursuit, using solitude to clarify true bonds. Communicate minimally but authentically to test foundations. Renewal awaits when both parties yield to timing's wisdom.
🏃 Health & Wellness
Stagnation manifests as lethargy or digestive slowdowns—counter with gentle movement like walking meditations to stir inner flow. Mentally, combat apathy through boundary-setting rituals. Restore vitality by honoring rest without self-judgment.
🧘 Spiritual Growth
Spiritual paths narrow in isolation, yet this refines devotion—practice silent communion to attune with higher currents. Release dogmatic pursuits; true growth pierces through inner stillness. Emerge with purified intuition.
🎯 Decision Making
Defer major choices until clarity pierces the fog; gather data quietly without premature commitments. Weigh options against long-term alignment, not urgency. Wise decisions arise from this enforced reflection.
🙏 Daily Practice
Daily Ritual
At dawn, stand barefoot on earth if possible, or visualize roots anchoring you. Inhale deeply, drawing heaven's light down your spine; exhale stagnation as gray mist from your core. Repeat thrice, affirming "I bridge the divide." Seal with a grounded step forward.
Meditation
Envision yourself as a frozen river beneath a vast sky—feel the ice crackle under warming sun rays from above. Allow cracks to widen, water flowing freely beneath. Merge sky and stream in harmonious current, breathing "release and receive."

🔄 Mark the Changing Lines
A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.
No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 12 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.
🔗 Related Hexagrams
Opposite: Hexagram 11 (Peace), as it unites heaven and earth in flowing harmony versus 12's divisive standoff.
Companion: Hexagram 23 (Splitting Apart), to masterfully release blockages during standstill.
Evolution: Often evolves into Hexagram 11 (Peace) when central lines yield, birthing union from separation.
Hexagrams inside and beside this one
Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.
-
Nuclear
Hexagram 53: Jiàn (Development)
Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Mountain) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Wind), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.
-
Inverted
Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 11 and 12 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.
-
Opposite
Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
