🔮 The Oracle Speaks

In shadows of the great peak, earth veils the summit in gentle hush, whispering: true strength lies not in clamor but in quiet yielding. Seeker's path unfolds where pride dissolves into fertile soil, birthing abundance unseen. Embrace the low valley's wisdom, for heaven favors the unassuming heart that levels all heights.

✨ Essence

Hexagram 15 embodies modesty as the art of balancing inner power with outward restraint, fostering genuine respect and sustainable success in a world that rewards flash over substance. It teaches that true achievement flows from humility, where one neither seeks the spotlight nor hides from responsibility, creating space for collaboration and organic growth. In modern life, this energy counters ego-driven pitfalls, urging authentic self-presentation that attracts allies without manipulation. Embrace it to navigate hierarchies with grace, turning potential conflicts into harmonious progress.

The lower Mountain trigram rises firm yet still, anchoring stability and introspection at the core, while the upper Earth trigram spreads yielding receptivity above, enveloping the peak in soft cover. This interaction tempers raw ambition with nurturing diffusion, preventing isolation by integrating strength into community. Mountain's contained energy gains Earth's fertile expanse, symbolizing how personal resolve expands through modest service. Together, they create a grounded flow: unyielding base softened by inclusive overlay, ideal for building enduring foundations without domination.

Farmers till the slopes without fanfare, their quiet labor yielding bountiful harvests that feed valleys far beyond the peak's shadow. ❓ Question Guidance

This Hexagram Best Answers Questions About:

1. Leadership and influence strategies; 2. Navigating social dynamics; 3. Building sustainable success without burnout.

Ask Yourself:

"How can I balance my strengths with service to others right now?"

⏰ Timing

Duration of Influence: 3-6 months, building gradually like earth settling over stone.

Action Window: Within 7-10 days, during stable, low-pressure windows like mid-week evenings.

📊 The Six Lines

Line 1: The Foundation

Root your endeavors in quiet confidence, advancing steadily without fanfare to build unshakeable trust. This initial yang strength, held low, attracts opportunities through demonstrated reliability rather than bold claims. Focus on small, consistent actions that prove your worth organically.

When Changing: Changing this line signals a shift to overt expression; temper emerging visibility with continued discretion to avoid early missteps and ensure lasting momentum.

Line 2: The Inner Growth

Cultivate inner poise by yielding to others' strengths, allowing your capabilities to shine through support rather than competition. This receptive phase deepens alliances, turning potential rivals into collaborators. Practice detachment from recognition to fuel personal evolution.

When Changing: A moving yin here invites assertive steps forward; seize this gently, leading by example without overshadowing the group dynamic.

Line 3: The Threshold

At this pivot, resist the urge to elevate yourself amid growing notice; instead, deflect praise to the collective effort. Challenges arise from envy or impatience—navigate by amplifying others' contributions. Humility here transforms obstacles into bridges toward higher purpose.

When Changing: Transformation warns of imbalance; recenter by withdrawing momentarily, reassessing to prevent hubris from derailing progress.

Line 4: The Outer Beginning

Extend your modest influence outward, engaging new circles with sincere listening over self-promotion. This entry demands adaptability, mirroring Earth's flow to integrate seamlessly. Success blooms from genuine curiosity about others' paths.

When Changing: Movement here propels visibility; harness it to share wisdom humbly, fostering reciprocity without expectation.

Line 5: The Ruler

In leadership, wield authority through service, elevating the team while diminishing your own silhouette. Decisions made in modesty inspire loyalty and innovation from below. Peak power manifests as quiet orchestration, not command.

When Changing: Shifting signals culmination; release control gracefully, mentoring successors to perpetuate the harmonious legacy.

Line 6: The Culmination

At the apex, guard against complacency by recommitting to humility, as excess visibility invites downfall. Completion calls for retreat into simplicity, honoring the cycle's return to earth. Warns that prolonged heights without grounding lead to erosion.

When Changing: A final change advises full dissolution of form; embrace change by seeding new beginnings in obscurity, ensuring renewal.

The classic text — James Legge, 1882

The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are quoted word for word from the Wikisource transcription of this chapter (revision 11883830, fetched 2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.

The judgment

Khien indicates progress and success. The superior man, (being humble as it implies), will have a (good) issue (to his undertakings).

The image

From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 320 (printed p. 286), corrected by eye against the page image.

(The trigram for) the earth and (that of) a mountain in the midst of it form Khien. The superior man, in accordance with this, diminishes what is excessive (in himself), and increases where there is any defect, bringing about an equality, according to the nature of the case, in his treatment (of himself and others).

The lines, counted from the bottom

  1. Line 1 (bottom)

The first line, divided, shows us the superior man who adds humility to humility. (Even) the great stream may be crossed with this, and there will be good fortune.

  2. Line 2

The second line, divided, shows us humility that has made itself recognised. With firm correctness there will be good fortune.

  3. Line 3

The third line, undivided, shows the superior man of (acknowledged) merit. He will maintain his success to the end, and have good fortune.

  4. Line 4

The fourth line, divided, shows one, whose action would be in every way advantageous, stirring up (the more) his humility.

  5. Line 5

The fifth line, divided, shows one who, without being rich, is able to employ his neighbours. He may advantageously use the force of arms. All his movements will be advantageous.

  6. Line 6 (top)

The sixth line, divided, shows us humility that has made itself recognised. The subject of it will with advantage put his hosts in motion; but (he will only) punish his own towns and state.

🔄 Mark the Changing Lines

A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.

Which lines changed?

No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 15 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.

Hexagrams inside and beside this one

Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.

  • Nuclear

    Hexagram 40: Xiè (Deliverance)

Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Water) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Thunder), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.

  • Inverted

    Hexagram 16: Yù (Enthusiasm)

Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 15 and 16 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.

  • Opposite

    Hexagram 10: Lǚ (Treading)

Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
