📊 The Six Lines
Line 1: The Foundation
Secure your base with humble actions, planting seeds of abundance in overlooked soils. Small, steadfast steps build an unshakeable treasury that grows unseen. Trust the initial spark, for it kindles the greater blaze ahead.
When Changing: Unforeseen allies emerge to amplify your start; collaborate swiftly to accelerate momentum without overreaching.
Line 2: The Inner Growth
Cultivate depth within, where quiet accumulation forges resilience against fleeting winds. Nurture talents privately, letting inner wealth mature like fine wine. This stage rewards patience, transforming potential into poised readiness.
When Changing: Share emerging strengths selectively; partnerships form organically, doubling your inner harvest.
Line 3: The Threshold
At the crossroads, test abundance against temptation; bold choices define lasting gain from illusory shine. Discern true value amid rising offers, anchoring decisions in core principles. Persevere through tests to cross into fuller possession.
When Changing: Reevaluate alliances—release misaligned ones to prevent dilution of your thriving core.
Line 4: The Outer Beginning
Step into the world with poised generosity, channeling resources to inspire collective uplift. Your influence now attracts collaborators drawn to your steady light. Initiate ventures that benefit the many, ensuring reciprocal flow.
When Changing: Unexpected windfalls arrive via networks; act decisively to weave them into your expanding web.

When Changing: Yield central control momentarily; this fosters innovation and prevents over-centralization.
Line 6: The Culmination
At the zenith, guard against complacency as peaks invite hidden erosion. Celebrate fully, then pivot to reinvest for sustainability. True completion lies in launching the next cycle from this summit.
When Changing: Excess attracts reversal—distribute surplus wisely to seed future abundances.
The classic text — James Legge, 1882
The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are quoted word for word from the Wikisource transcription of this chapter (revision 11883781, fetched 2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.
The judgment
Tâ Yû indicates that, (under the circumstances which it implies), there will be great progress and success.
The image
From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 319 (printed p. 285), corrected by eye against the page image.
(The trigram for) heaven and (that of) fire above it form Tâ Yû. The superior man, in accordance with this, represses what is evil and gives distinction to what is good, in sympathy with the excellent Heaven-conferred (nature).
The lines, counted from the bottom
-
Line 1 (bottom)
In the first line, undivided, there is no approach to what is injurious, and there is no error. Let there be a realisation of the difficulty (and danger of the position), and there will be no error (to the end).
-
Line 2
In the second line, undivided, we have a large waggon with its load. In whatever direction advance is made, there will be no error.
-
Line 3
The third line, undivided, shows us a feudal prince presenting his offerings to the Son of Heaven. A small man would be unequal (to such a duty).
-
Line 4
The fourth line, undivided, shows its subject keeping his great resources under restraint. There will be no error.
-
Line 5
The fifth line, divided, shows the sincerity of its subject reciprocated by that of all the others (represented in the hexagram). Let him display a proper majesty, and there will be good fortune.
-
Line 6 (top)

🔄 Mark the Changing Lines
A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.
No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 14 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.

Hexagrams inside and beside this one
Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.
-
Nuclear
Hexagram 43: Guài (Breakthrough)
Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Heaven) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Lake), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.
-
Inverted
Hexagram 13: Tóng Rén (Fellowship)
Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 13 and 14 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.
-
Opposite
Hexagram 8: Bǐ (Holding Together)
Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
