Breakthrough

Lake over Heaven
"Proclaim. Resolve. Breakthrough now."

🔮 The Oracle Speaks

From heaven's unyielding forge below, the lake's mirror shatters silence with crystalline resolve. Proclaim your truth like thunder echoing over still waters, parting veils of stagnation. Resolution emerges where bold voice meets unshakeable will—step forth, and the breakthrough claims its dawn.

✨ Essence

Hexagram 43 heralds a pivotal breakthrough, where pent-up energies converge into decisive resolution. This is the moment to voice unspoken truths and cut through illusions with clarity and force. In everyday life, it urges bold communication to resolve conflicts, launch initiatives, or claim your rightful space. Embrace it to transform obstacles into open pathways, but temper power with precision to avoid backlash.

The lower trigram Heaven surges with pure, creative yang energy, providing an unstoppable foundation of inner strength and momentum from the core. Above, the Lake trigram ripples with openness, joy, and reflective communication, inviting the world to witness the inner force. Their union creates a dynamic tension: heaven's vigor pushes upward, while lake's surface amplifies and disperses it outward in waves of revelation. This interplay fosters breakthroughs by channeling raw power into articulate, persuasive expression that resonates widely.

🖼️ The Image

A vast crystalline dam atop a heavenly spring cracks under mounting pressure, unleashing a torrent of luminous water that carves triumphant channels through the earth. Sunlight fractures into rainbows on the surging flow, illuminating hidden valleys below. This vivid rupture symbolizes unstoppable resolution, where inner force meets outer expression in harmonious release.

❓ Question Guidance

This Hexagram Best Answers Questions About:

Breakthrough strategies in stalled projects; truth-telling in relationships; decisive leadership choices

Ask Yourself:

"What truth must I boldly proclaim to unlock my resolution?"

⏰ Timing

Duration of Influence: 3-7 weeks of intensifying momentum

Action Window: Within the first 3 days, initiate bold communications

📊 The Six Lines

Line 1: The Foundation

Establish your base with quiet determination, gathering allies through subtle strength rather than overt displays. This stage builds the momentum needed for later proclamation—nurture roots in preparation. Solidify intentions privately to ensure the breakthrough endures.

When Changing: Changing this line softens the foundation, signaling delays; pause to reassess alliances before advancing, preventing early erosion of support.

Line 2: The Inner Growth

Cultivate inner resolve amid growing tensions, refining your message like a blade in the forge. Harmonize personal power with emerging insights for authentic growth. This phase deepens conviction, preparing you to influence without force.

When Changing: A moving line here introduces vulnerability; protect your core by seeking counsel, turning potential weakness into strategic adaptability.

Line 3: The Threshold

At the crossroads, confront resistance head-on with measured boldness—test the waters before the flood. This challenging pivot demands discernment to distinguish true obstacles from illusions. Navigate wisely to propel forward without reckless expenditure.

When Changing: Transformation warns of overreach; retreat strategically to regroup, transforming crisis into a calculated pivot toward greater clarity.

Line 4: The Outer Beginning

Extend your influence outward, initiating dialogues that ripple into broader spheres. Articulate visions clearly to draw cooperative energies. This entry into new realms rewards directness with accelerating momentum.

When Changing: Instability arises—anchor new ventures with flexible plans, allowing the shift to foster innovative alliances rather than isolation.

Line 5: The Ruler

In the seat of leadership, wield authority through inspiring proclamation that unites diverse voices. Guide with radiant clarity, fostering collective resolution. Peak influence blooms when ego yields to shared triumph.

When Changing: This shift tempers power with humility; embrace counsel to avoid hubris, evolving leadership into enduring wisdom.

Line 6: The Culmination

At the apex, soften the edge—resolution completes not in dominance, but in receptive harmony. Warns against excess proclamation; integrate gains quietly to sustain peace. Culmination invites reflection over further conquest.

When Changing: Activating this line unleashes full yang force, propelling into pure creative potential; channel the apex wisely for transcendent new beginnings.

The classic text — James Legge, 1882

The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are transcribed from a scan of that printing (Wikimedia Commons, Sacred Books of the East - Volume 16.djvu, scan pages 185, 186 and 187; printed pages 151–153): the scan's machine-read text was corrected line by line against the page images (2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.

The judgment

Kwâi requires (in him who would fulfil its meaning) the exhibition (of the culprit's guilt) in the royal court, and a sincere and earnest appeal (for sympathy and support), with a consciousness of the peril (involved in cutting off the criminal). He should (also) make announcement in his own city, and show that it will not be well to have recourse at once to arms. (In this way) there will be advantage in whatever he shall go forward to.

The image

From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 354 (printed p. 320), corrected by eye against the page image.

(The trigram representing) heaven and that for the waters of a marsh mounting above it form Kwâi. The superior man, in accordance with this, bestows emolument on those below him, and dislikes allowing his gifts to accumulate (undispensed).

The lines, counted from the bottom

  1. Line 1 (bottom)

The first line, undivided, shows its subject in (the pride of) strength advancing with his toes. He goes forward, but will not succeed. There will be ground for blame.

  2. Line 2

The second line, undivided, shows its subject full of apprehension and appealing (for sympathy and help). Late at night hostile measures may be (taken against him), but he need not be anxious about them.

  3. Line 3

The third line, undivided, shows its subject (about to advance) with strong (and determined) looks. There will be evil. (But) the superior man, bent on cutting off (the criminal), will walk alone and encounter the rain, (till he be hated by his proper associates) as if he were contaminated (by the others). (In the end) there will be no blame against him.

  4. Line 4

The fourth line, undivided, shows one from whose buttocks the skin has been stripped, and who walks slowly and with difficulty. (If he could act) like a sheep led (after its companions), occasion for repentance would disappear. But though he hear these words, he will not believe them.

  5. Line 5

The fifth line, undivided, shows (the small men like) a bed of purslain, which ought to be uprooted with the utmost determination. (The subject of the line having such determination), his action, in harmony with his central position, will lead to no error or blame.

  6. Line 6 (top)

The sixth line, divided, shows its subject without any (helpers) on whom to call. His end will be evil.

🔄 Mark the Changing Lines

A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.

Which lines changed?

No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 43 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.

Hexagrams inside and beside this one

Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.

  • Nuclear

    Hexagram 1: Qián (The Creative)

Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Heaven) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Heaven), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.

  • Inverted

Hexagram 44: Gòu (Coming to Meet)

Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 43 and 44 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.

  • Opposite

    Hexagram 23: Bō (Splitting Apart)

Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
