Heaven over Lake
"Tread wisely, claim your path."

🔮 The Oracle Speaks

Tread the tiger's shadowed trail where heaven's vault kisses lake's shimmering veil. Each footfall a whispered pact with peril, balanced on the blade of mindful grace. In measured steps, the mighty yield; rash strides summon the fang's fierce reply. Heaven's breath stirs lake's calm mirror—reflect your poise, and power aligns.

✨ Essence

Hexagram 10 embodies the art of careful navigation through precarious terrain, urging deliberate actions amid potential hazards like powerful influences or high-stakes opportunities. It advises blending humility with strategic boldness to approach superiors, risks, or untamed situations without provoking backlash. Success arises from precise timing and respectful conduct, turning possible dangers into pathways of advancement. In daily life, it calls for pausing to assess before advancing, fostering resilience through awareness rather than force.

The upper trigram Heaven unleashes pure, expansive yang energy, symbolizing creative potential and unyielding strength from above. The lower trigram Lake offers a receptive, joyful surface that mirrors and amplifies what it receives, yet hides depths of uncertainty. Their union creates a dynamic where Heaven's lofty power must descend cautiously onto Lake's reflective expanse, teaching adaptation without distortion. This interplay demands harmony: Heaven tempers its force through Lake's clarity, birthing the wisdom to tread boldly yet invisibly on slippery grounds.

🖼️ The Image

A solitary crane glides across a mist-shrouded glacial river under a canopy of piercing stars, each deliberate step cracking the ice just enough to echo caution through the night. The water below mirrors the heavens perfectly, revealing the bird's path as a bridge between ethereal heights and treacherous depths. In this poised ballet, survival blooms from synchronized breath and unerring instinct.

The classic text — James Legge, 1882

The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are quoted word for word from the Wikisource transcription of this chapter (revision 11868573, fetched 2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.

The judgment

(Lî suggests the idea of) one treading on the tail of a tiger, which does not bite him. There will be progress and success.

The image

From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 314 (printed p. 280), corrected by eye against the page image.

(The trigram representing) the sky above, and below it (that representing the waters of) a marsh, form Lî. The superior man, in accordance with this, discriminates between high and low, and gives settlement to the aims of the people.

The lines, counted from the bottom

  1. Line 1 (bottom)

The first line, undivided, shows its subject treading his accustomed path. If he go forward, there will be no error.

  2. Line 2

The second line, undivided, shows its subject treading the path that is level and easy;—a quiet and solitary man, to whom, if he be firm and correct, there will be good fortune.

  3. Line 3

The third line, divided, shows a one-eyed man (who thinks he) can see; a lame man (who thinks he) can walk well; one who treads on the tail of a tiger and is bitten. (All this indicates) ill fortune. We have a (mere) bravo acting the part of a great ruler.

  4. Line 4

The fourth line, undivided, shows its subject treading on the tail of a tiger. He becomes full of apprehensive caution, and in the end there will be good fortune.

  5. Line 5

The fifth line, undivided, shows the resolute tread of its subject. Though he be firm and correct, there will be peril.

  6. Line 6 (top)

The sixth line, undivided, tells us to look at (the whole course) that is trodden, and examine the presage which that gives. If it be complete and without failure, there will be great good fortune.

🔄 Mark the Changing Lines

A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.

Which lines changed?

No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 10 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.

Hexagrams inside and beside this one

Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.

  • Nuclear

Hexagram 37: Jiā Rén (The Family)

Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Fire) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Wind), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.

  • Inverted

Hexagram 9: Xiǎo Chù (Small Taming)

Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 9 and 10 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.

  • Opposite

    Hexagram 15: Qiān (Modesty)

Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
