🔮 The Oracle Speaks
✨ Essence
This hexagram reveals the art of gentle restraint, where small, deliberate actions harness greater forces without clash. In modern life, it guides building momentum through consistent micro-adjustments rather than bold overhauls, ideal for habit formation or subtle influence. Success lies in recognizing limits and working within them, turning potential into reality drop by drop. Embrace it to navigate constraints with elegance, fostering sustainable progress amid uncertainty.
The lower trigram, Heaven, surges with pure, creative yang energy—a bedrock of innate strength and initiative. The upper trigram, Wind, introduces flexible, penetrating influence that disperses and gathers softly. Their union births an energy of contained potency: Heaven's might is tamed by Wind's whisper, creating harmonious persuasion over domination. This interplay teaches riding inner power outward with nuance, like breath animating form.
🖼️ The Image
A fleet of autumn leaves drifts on a steady mountain breeze, each one nudging the current toward distant shores without resistance. They cluster patiently, forming eddies of quiet command amid the river's rush. This dance embodies influence born of subtlety, reshaping flows through accumulated grace.
🌟 Divination Insights
⚠️ Shadow Warning
Impatience scatters fragile gains, turning subtle progress into futile storms. Clinging to minor wins invites stagnation, blocking the wind's natural evolution.
🎁 Gift Revealed
Embracing this energy unlocks masterful timing, where small acts yield exponential influence. It bestows the grace to shape destinies through effortless alignment.

"What one small, consistent action aligns my inner strength with today's flow?"
⏰ Timing
Duration of Influence: 9 days to 9 weeks, building gradually.

📊 The Six Lines
Line 1: The Foundation
Root your efforts in unshakeable intent, starting with tiny, firm commitments that align with your core strength. Avoid scattering energy; one focused step secures the base for wind's gathering. This stage rewards quiet preparation over flashy starts.
When Changing: Changing this line signals early flexibility needed—adapt plans gently to prevent foundational cracks from forming.
Line 2: The Inner Growth
Nurture momentum inwardly by repeating small disciplines that build resilience. Connect with allies through understated support, letting mutual benefit emerge naturally. Steady inner alignment amplifies your subtle pull.
When Changing: A shifting line here urges releasing rigid control, inviting collaborative winds to accelerate growth.
Line 3: The Threshold
At this pivot, tension arises as accumulated force meets outer resistance—pause to assess rather than push. Channel energy into precise, minimal interventions to cross without force. Transition demands discerning the edge of influence.
When Changing: Transformation warns of overreach; step back to recalibrate and preserve gains.
Line 4: The Outer Beginning
Extend your reach outward with calculated poise, influencing surroundings through timely nudges. Partner with those who amplify your gentle sway, but measure involvement to avoid dilution. New territory opens via aligned subtlety.
When Changing: This change invites bolder expression, transforming restraint into flowing achievement.
Line 5: The Ruler
From the center of influence, wield soft authority by listening and guiding without decree. Harmony peaks when others willingly align to your vision. Lead through example, harvesting the fruits of patient cultivation.
When Changing: Movement here releases central hold, dispersing power to empower collective flow.
Line 6: The Culmination
At apex, recognize fullness—avoid grasping excess; release to sustain legacy. Gentle restraint completes its cycle, seeding future winds. Culmination whispers: what rises softly endures beyond the peak.
When Changing: A final shift crowns restraint with pure creative release, evolving to unbound potential.
The classic text — James Legge, 1882
The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are quoted word for word from the Wikisource transcription of this chapter (revision 11868371, fetched 2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.
The judgment
Hsiâo Khû indicates that (under its conditions) there will be progress and success. (We see) dense clouds, but no rain coming from our borders in the west.
The image
From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 312 (printed p. 278), corrected by eye against the page image.
(The trigram representing) the sky, and that representing wind moving above it, form Hsiâo Khû. The superior man, in accordance with this, adorns the outward manifestation of his virtue.
The lines, counted from the bottom
-
Line 1 (bottom)
The first line, undivided, shows its subject returning and pursuing his own course. What mistake should he fall into? There will be good fortune.
-
Line 2
The second line, undivided, shows its subject, by the attraction (of the former line), returning (to the proper course). There will be good fortune.
-
Line 3
The third line, undivided, suggests the idea of a carriage, the strap beneath which has been removed, or of a husband and wife looking on each other with averted eyes.
-
Line 4
The fourth line, divided, shows its subject possessed of sincerity. The danger of bloodshed is thereby averted, and his (ground for) apprehension dismissed. There will be no mistake.
-
Line 5
The fifth line, undivided, shows its subject possessed of sincerity, and drawing others to unite with him. Rich in resources, he employs his neighbours (in the same cause with himself).
-
Line 6 (top)
The topmost line, undivided, shows how the rain has fallen, and the (onward progress) is stayed;—(so) must we value the full accumulation of the virtue (represented by the upper trigram). But a wife (exercising restraint), however firm and correct she may be, is in a position of peril, (and like) the moon approaching to the full. If the superior man prosecute his measures (in such circumstances), there will be evil.

🙏 Daily Practice
Daily Ritual
At dawn, stand facing east and take nine slow breaths, visualizing wind gathering around your core. Whisper one intention for gentle progress, then release a single leaf or paper note into the breeze. Seal with a nod of restraint, carrying the calm into your day.
Meditation
Close eyes and envision heaven's light rising within, met by swirling winds that softly contain it. Feel the gentle pressure building harmony in your center. Breathe into this balance for five cycles, releasing on exhales.
Journaling Prompts
1. What small action today tames a larger challenge? 2. Where have I forced outcomes, and how can I whisper instead? 3. List three accumulating wins from this week.
🔄 Mark the Changing Lines
A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.
No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 9 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.
🔗 Related Hexagrams
Opposite: Hexagram 60 (Limitation), its rigid boundaries clash with gentle flow.
Companion: Hexagram 1 (Creative), amplifying pure power through subtle direction.
Evolution: Often transforms into Hexagram 1 (Creative) as restraint matures into full expression.
Hexagrams inside and beside this one
Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.
-
Nuclear
Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Lake) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Fire), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.
-
Inverted
Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 9 and 10 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.
-
Opposite
Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
