Míng Yí

Darkening of the Light

☷ ☲
Earth over Fire
"Shield flame, endure night."

🔮 The Oracle Speaks

In shadows deep where brilliance hides its flame, the wise one guards the inner spark from storm. Earth veils the fire's glow, a cloak of night for survival's sake. Endure the eclipse with quiet strength, for light renews when darkness yields.

✨ Essence

In the Darkening of the Light, your inner wisdom must retreat from hostile eyes, preserving its power amid chaos. This hexagram signals times of adversity where overt expression invites peril, urging strategic withdrawal to nurture resilience. Protect your truths like embers beneath ash, emerging unscathed when conditions align. Embrace concealment not as defeat, but as a tactical sanctuary for future radiance.

The lower trigram of Fire embodies your innate brilliance and clarity, a dynamic force yearning to illuminate. Yet the upper trigram of Earth presses down with yielding stability, smothering that light to shield it from erosion. Their union creates a muffled intensity: fire's passion tempered by earth's protective shroud, fostering hidden growth over exposed blaze. This interplay teaches that true power lies in subdued endurance, where earth's receptivity safeguards fire's vitality.

🖼️ The Image

A phoenix ember buried in fertile soil during a tempest, its glow unseen yet warming the roots of rebirth. Rain lashes the surface, but underground, the fire patiently transforms darkness into fertile promise. This veiled vitality awaits the storm's end to burst forth renewed.

📊 The Six Lines

Line 1: The Foundation

At the outset, anchor your light firmly yet discreetly, building resilience from core stability. Avoid flaunting potential amid early threats; instead, root deeply in self-trust. This solid base ensures your inner fire withstands initial pressures.

When Changing: When changing, initial strength softens into flexibility, signaling a need to adapt quietly rather than resist, opening paths to subtle alliances.

Line 2: The Inner Growth

Cultivate your gifts in secrecy, drawing nourishment from within during this vulnerable phase. Yield to outer darkness without losing your spark, allowing quiet evolution. Inner harmony blooms safest away from prying forces.

When Changing: Moving here reveals hidden supporters emerging, transforming isolation into gentle collaboration for steady progress.

Line 3: The Threshold

Tension peaks as light strains against encroaching dark; exercise caution to avoid reckless exposure. Channel assertiveness into measured restraint, navigating this pivot with tempered resolve. Peril lurks in impatience—pause and reassess.

When Changing: This shift dissolves barriers, ushering clarity and forward momentum as concealment gives way to safe revelation.

Line 4: The Outer Beginning

Step into the wider world with veiled intentions, aligning with reliable outer influences for protection. Blend your light into the earth's camouflage, fostering alliances without full disclosure. Subtle outreach preserves your essence.

When Changing: Change invites deeper trust from surroundings, evolving guarded steps into empowered navigation.

Line 5: The Ruler

From a position of influence, wield power through understatement, guiding others by example rather than decree. Your concealed wisdom commands respect without challenge; maintain poise amid envy. Leadership thrives in humility's shadow.

When Changing: Movement here amplifies authority, transitioning veiled rule into openly celebrated guidance.

Line 6: The Culmination

At the apex, prolonged hiding risks extinguishing your flame—seek timely emergence to avoid stagnation. Excess concealment breeds isolation; heed signs of renewal. Completion demands balancing shadow with dawn's first light.

When Changing: This final shift culminates in full illumination, birthing a new cycle of unhindered brilliance.

The classic text — James Legge, 1882

The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are transcribed from a scan of that printing (Wikimedia Commons, Sacred Books of the East - Volume 16.djvu, scan pages 168 and 169; printed pages 134–135): the scan's machine-read text was corrected line by line against the page images (2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.

The judgment

Ming Î indicates that (in the circumstances which it denotes) it will be advantageous to realise the difficulty (of the position), and maintain firm correctness.

The image

From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 345 (printed p. 311), corrected by eye against the page image.

(The trigram representing) the earth and that for the bright (sun) entering within it form Ming Î. The superior man, in accordance with this, conducts his management of men;—he shows his intelligence by keeping it obscured.

The lines, counted from the bottom

  1. Line 1 (bottom)

The first line, undivided, shows its subject, (in the condition indicated by) Ming Î, flying, but with drooping wings. When the superior man (is revolving) his going away, he may be for three days without eating. Wherever he goes, the people there may speak (derisively of him).

  2. Line 2

The second line, divided, shows its subject, (in the condition indicated by) Ming Î, wounded in the left thigh. He saves himself by the strength of a (swift) horse; and is fortunate.

  3. Line 3

The third line, undivided, shows its subject, (in the condition indicated by) Ming Î, hunting in the south, and taking the great chief (of the darkness). He should not be eager to make (all) correct (at once).

  4. Line 4

The fourth line, divided, shows its subject (just) entered into the left side of the belly (of the dark land). (But) he is able to carry out the mind appropriate (in the condition indicated by) Ming Î, quitting the gate and courtyard (of the lord of darkness).

  5. Line 5

The fifth line, divided, shows how the count of Kî fulfilled the condition indicated by Ming Î. It will be advantageous to be firm and correct.

  6. Line 6 (top)

The sixth line, divided, shows the case where there is no light, but (only) obscurity. (Its subject) had at first ascended to (the top of) the sky; his future shall be to go into the earth.

🔄 Mark the Changing Lines

A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.

Which lines changed?

No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 36 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.

Hexagrams inside and beside this one

Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.

  • Nuclear

    Hexagram 40: Xiè (Deliverance)

Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Water) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Thunder), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.

  • Inverted

    Hexagram 35: Jìn (Progress)

Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 35 and 36 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.

  • Opposite

    Hexagram 6: Sòng (Conflict)

Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
