🔮 The Oracle Speaks
✨ Essence
This hexagram heralds the quiet resurgence after depletion, where the first spark of energy rekindles in a receptive field. It signals a natural turning point, urging you to reconnect with core strengths stripped bare by hardship. Embrace incremental rebuilding over grand gestures; persistence in small steps yields profound restoration. Renewal flows organically when you honor the pause that precedes it.
The lower trigram Thunder embodies awakening force, stirring from dormancy like roots pushing through frost. Above it, Earth's upper trigram offers boundless receptivity, a nurturing expanse that tempers Thunder's jolt into steady growth. Their union creates grounded momentum—vitality emerges not as chaos, but as harmonious emergence from stability. This interplay teaches that true power integrates impulse with patience, fostering sustainable revival.
🖼️ The Image
A lone evergreen sentinel on a snow-dusted hillock cracks its bark as subterranean lightning ignites sap flow. Delicate buds unfurl toward the solstice sun, drawing nourishment from thawed depths. This tableau mirrors renewal's alchemy: dormancy yields to verdant promise through earth's patient conduit.

Ask Yourself:
"What core strength am I ready to reclaim for renewal?"
⏰ Timing
Duration of Influence: 21-30 days for initial momentum, up to 6 months for full integration.

📊 The Six Lines
Line 1: The Foundation
The initial yang spark at the base ignites return's promise—step lightly into reconnection, trusting instinct's pull homeward. Anchor in authenticity; this humble beginning fortifies all that follows. Avoid haste; let this root deepen undisturbed.
When Changing: When moving, seize the emergent opportunity with quiet resolve, transforming isolation into alliance—act now, but yield to unfolding support.
Line 2: The Inner Growth
Nurture internal harmony as energy consolidates; reflect deeply to align scattered parts. This phase rewards solitude for clarity, building resilience unseen. Cultivate gratitude for the groundwork already laid.
When Changing: Moving reveals hidden allies—extend trust cautiously, inviting mutual renewal without overcommitting.
Line 3: The Threshold
Tension arises at the pivot; doubts cloud the path, tempting retreat. Persevere through ambiguity, viewing obstacles as teachers of discernment. Balance vulnerability with firm boundaries to cross intact.
When Changing: When shifting, release clinging fears decisively—breakthrough awaits beyond the impasse, birthing clarity.
Line 4: The Outer Beginning
Venture outward with renewed poise; engage others from a place of quiet strength. This entry demands adaptability—mirror earth's receptivity to attract opportunities. Forge connections that resonate with your revitalized core.
When Changing: Moving signals harmonious partnerships—collaborate freely, as shared vision amplifies your return.
Line 5: The Ruler
At the helm, wield influence through empathetic guidance; lead by embodying renewal's grace. Inspire collective revival without dominating—your centered presence magnetizes loyalty. Prioritize the greater harmony over personal gain.
When Changing: When activating, elevate the group dynamic—your wisdom catalyzes widespread transformation.
Line 6: The Culmination
At apex, guard against complacency; completion invites reflection, not excess. Prepare for the next cycle's descent by honoring achievements humbly. Excess pursuit disrupts the return's delicate balance.
When Changing: Moving warns of overreach—retreat gracefully to preserve gains, averting reversal.
The classic text — James Legge, 1882
The judgment, the image and the line statements below are James Legge's translation, from The Sacred Books of the East, vol. XVI, The Yî King (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882), now in the public domain. The judgment and line statements are quoted word for word from the Wikisource transcription of this chapter (revision 11915964, fetched 2026-09-30). The image comes from the scan page named beside it. Legge's notes are left out. Words in round brackets are Legge's own additions to the terse Chinese, and his spellings of Chinese names are kept as printed. The other sections of this page are this site's modern reading, not Legge's.
The judgment
Fû indicates that there will be free course and progress (in what it denotes). (The subject of it) finds no one to distress him in his exits and entrances; friends come to him, and no error is committed. He will return and repeat his (proper) course. In seven days comes his return. There will be advantage in whatever direction movement is made.
The image
From Legge's Appendix II, Treatise on the Symbolism of the Hexagrams: the paragraph he calls ‘the Great Symbolism’, which reads the figure as its two trigrams and draws a lesson from them. It is one of the appendixes, a commentary on the text, not part of the judgment or the line statements. Scan page 331 (printed p. 297), corrected by eye against the page image.
(The trigram representing) the earth and that for thunder in the midst of it form Fû. The ancient kings, in accordance with this, on the day of the (winter) solstice, shut the gates of the passes (from one state to another), so that the travelling merchants could not (then) pursue their journeys, nor the princes go on with the inspection of their states.
The lines, counted from the bottom
-
Line 1 (bottom)
The first line, undivided, shows its subject returning (from an error) of no great extent, which would not proceed to anything requiring repentance. There will be great good fortune.
-
Line 2
The second line, divided, shows the admirable return (of its subject). There will be good fortune.
-
Line 3
The third line, divided, shows one who has made repeated returns. The position is perilous, but there will be no error.
-
Line 4
The fourth line, divided, shows its subject moving right in the centre (among those represented by the other divided lines), and yet returning alone (to his proper path).
-
Line 5
The fifth line, divided, shows the noble return of its subject. There will be no ground for repentance.
-
Line 6 (top)
The topmost line, divided, shows its subject all astray on the subject of returning. There will be evil. There will be calamities and errors. If with his views he put the hosts in motion, the end will be a great defeat, whose issues will extend to the ruler of the state. Even in ten years he will not be able to repair the disaster.

🔄 Mark the Changing Lines
A cast marks some of the six lines as changing and leaves the rest still. Tick the ones yours marked, counting from the bottom line up, and this works out the hexagram they turn this one into. Each tick flips that line to its opposite — broken becomes unbroken, unbroken becomes broken — and the six lines you are left with are one of the other 63 hexagrams. It resolves as you tick: there is nothing to submit, the arithmetic runs in this page on your own device, and nothing you tick is sent anywhere.
No lines marked as changing. A reading with nothing moving in it stays put: Hexagram 24 is the whole answer and there is no second hexagram to look up.

Opposite: Hexagram 23 Stripping Apart, as it depicts erosion's fragmentation versus Return's regenerative gathering.
Companion: Hexagram 2 The Receptive, amplifying earth's nurturing role in sustaining thunder's spark.

Hexagrams inside and beside this one
Computed from this hexagram's six lines, counted from the bottom. These are structural relations, not part of Legge's translation, and not readings in themselves.
-
Nuclear
Hexagram 2: Kūn (The Receptive)
Formed by taking lines 2–3–4 as the lower trigram (here Earth) and lines 3–4–5 as the upper (here Earth), so the bottom and top lines drop out. Some readers treat it as the core hidden inside a situation; schools differ on how much weight it deserves.
-
Inverted
Hexagram 23: Bō (Splitting Apart)
Formed by turning the six lines upside down, so line 6 becomes line 1. The traditional King Wen order is built on this: 56 of the 64 hexagrams stand side by side with their inversion, as Hexagrams 23 and 24 do. Schools differ on how much weight the inversion carries in a reading.
-
Opposite
Hexagram 44: Gòu (Coming to Meet)
Formed by flipping every line: each solid line becomes broken and each broken line solid. Some readers use it to see what a situation is not; schools differ on how much weight it carries.
